Unity though Compromise
versus
Unity through Force

When there are two opposing beliefs in America there are two approaches for the government to achieve unity. These are force or compromise. Neither approach really achieves total unity (they are opposing beliefs after all) but compromise does make it easier for groups with opposing beliefs to coexist.

"Unity through Force" is when a conflict in beliefs is solved at the Federal level. Abortion will be used here as an example because how the abortion conflict has been handled is a perfect illustration of how Unity through Force works. America is unified legally on abortion because the opinion of nine Supreme Court justices has forced all State Governments to make abortion legal. There is no compromise from a legal standpoint. Legally one belief has won while the other belief has lost. Morally there is still very much a conflict of beliefs on abortion in America. The "Unity through Force" approach of a Nation under Government increases that conflict as there is no compromise. Legally it is winner take all when these decisions are made at the Federal level.

"Unity through Compromise" is when a conflict in beliefs is solved at the State level or lower. As explained in detail below using abortion as an example this increases the chances of the two opposing beliefs on abortion coexisting because there will likely be compromise when handled at the State level. There is compromise if some States keep abortion legal while other States don't. If this happens then a woman who wants an abortion but lives in a State where the Government of that State does not allow abortion would still be able to have an abortion because there is compromise. She will simply travel to a State that allows abortion. This does make it more difficult for her to abort a Life but that is why it is a compromise. The compromise is that States that believe abortion is morally wrong will outlaw abortion while States that believe that abortion is a woman's reproductive right will allow like-minded women to visit their State to have an abortion. Neither side is totally happy but with the Unity through Compromise approach of a Nation under God but the key difference is that neither side has had the beliefs of the other side forced on them by the Federal Government. There is compromise.

Abortion is a perfect issue to use to illustrate the difference between "Unity through Force" and "Unity through Compromise." Abortion is a woman's "Choice to abort or not to abort" which the letter referenced in the footnotes below shows comes down to a difference between the two following beliefs. (1)

  • The belief that some level of Government should make a woman's "Choice to abort or not to abort" legal.
  • The belief that some level of Government should not make a woman's "Choice to abort or not to abort" legal.

The letter also contains an example of "Unity through Compromise" that is a more detailed explanation than given here. As the letter explains moving the decision of which of the two beliefs listed above will dominate the other belief to the State level instead of the Federal level allows for compromise

Our organization is attempting to have a law voted on at the Federal level that would allow each State to decide to either keep or overturn the Roe versus Wade decision. This legislation would restore "Unity through Compromise" and would help us achieve our mission. The reason is that how a Federal Representative votes on the legislation would be an extremely good indicator if that Representative prefers a Nation under God or a Nation under Government.

There are several levels of Government all of which can be individual communities. These levels are Federal, State, County and City. Currently America is unified legally on a woman's "Choice to abort or not to abort" because an opinion of nine Supreme Court judges forced every community (Federal, State, County and City - all of them) to accept that a woman's "Choice to abort or not to abort" should be legal. This is "Unity through Force." America is unified legally on abortion but is definitely not unified morally on abortion. Our proposed legislation will reveal one of the following about a Federal representative by how they vote.

If a representative believes that the highest level of government possible (the Federal Government) should decide disagreements in beliefs then that representative prefers "Unity through Force" and will vote for continuing to force States to accept the Roe versus Wade opinion that made abortion legal at the Federal level.

If a representative believes that the lowest level of government possible (usually the State level for moral issues) should decide disagreements in beliefs then that representative prefers "Unity through Compromise" and will vote to allow each State to decide to accept or not accept the Roe versus Wade opinion that made abortion legal at the Federal level.

If the law the Congress Of Hope would like to see put to a vote passed this would be an example of "Unity through Compromise" as now each State would decide if a woman's Choice to abort or not to abort would be legal in that State. (2) As explained in the letter as long as just one State kept a woman's choice to abort or not to abort legal then compromise has been achieved.

(2) The Congress of Hope offers no opinion if America will be better or worse off by passing or not passing the law our organization wants put to a vote. Our organization is educational only and believes this vote will be a useful indicator as to if a Representative prefers America as a Nation under God or as a Nation under Government. Our organization does not endorse one over the other as there are advantages to each.
